Today, I am in a particularly unfunny mood, mostly because I’m miserable. I’m miserable because I got COVID last week. And like everyone else who gets COVID, at least the people who get symptoms, it seems to never go away.
The Husband is convinced we had the flu. I think it’s distinction without a difference. Because I’m still miserable.
And so was he. And so was The Kid, who after declaring herself having maybe the world’s best immune system, succumbed to maybe-it’s-covid-maybe-it’s-the-flu.
I’m one of the lucky few who have managed to avoid contracting COVID until now. But lest you think I am too lucky, I could be in a hazmat suit and could still come down with a cold if someone else in the room 100 yards away sneezed.
No, I’ve just been very privileged. Small office, hybrid WFH.
Take care of yourselves, my friends. As everyone (and their uncle) has said to me this past week, something is going around. So whether it’s COVID, the flu, or the common cold, be well.
The Promos
Risky Decision by B.P. Stevens is on the Kindle right now. This book is a small-town thriller featuring the Carter family.
From the Amazon page:
Mason is back on track with his quest for justice. He is sure of his sister's killer and plans to put them behind bars. Much to his surprise, his journey takes a small but helpful diversion that leads him to find a long-kept secret that changes the entire dynamic of his family.
A Short Book Review of Mulholland Dive by Michael Connelly
3 out of 5 stars
Mulholland Dive features three non-Harry Bosch short stories: “Cahoots,” “Mulholland Dive,” and “Two-Bagger.” I originally purchased this book because I thought they were more Harry Bosch short stories, and then I became very confused when I read them.
Perhaps that they weren’t Harry Bosch stories colored my point-of-view, but I didn’t much care for this set of three. They were well written (in the sense that an author who has written an entire bookshelf worth of books should write well), but it was … a distinction without a difference.
All of the stories featured an anti-hero of sorts, and we saw the seedy underworld of crime that we know exists and yet that we don’t want to know exists. This sounds like a recipe for a good book, amirite? The issue is that it wasn’t.
That’s because, since the short stories were, well, short … we didn’t get to care about the characters at all. In an anti-hero story, it works because we get to see what makes the anti-hero the anti-hero. In these stories, we just saw their bad behavior. In other words, I would have been more sold on this if we got to see what made them tick.
Anyway, the stories were still written well, and they are short enough, so perhaps you want to give them a go.
Happenings
So I meant to do television reviews of Bosch: Legacy (season 1 and season 2), but I got COVID. When I am sick, I turn into a big, whiny baby. And I haven’t felt like doing anything except being a big, whiny baby.
I did watch a lot of the various Avengers movies. Action-packed and quite funny. A great combo. I still haven’t quite figured out why Natasha Romonoff and Barton are Avengers, but I guess that can go down as one of the great mysteries of life. I also know I’m being main-stream there for liking said franchise, but hey, give a girl a break. I have COVID.
Ugh! We had Covid mid November. Hope everyone's on the mend.
